21st Conference on Applied Climatology

The 21th Conference on Applied Climatology is sponsored by the American Meteorological Society and organized by the AMS Committee on Applied Climatology.  It will be jointly held with the 17th Symposium on Meteorological Observation and Instrumentation.  The conferences will be held 10-13 June, 2014, at the Denver Marriott Westminster Hotel in Westminster, Colorado.

Accomodations

Attendees are responsible for making their own hotel arrangements.  All meeting sessions for the conferences will be held at the Denver Marriott Westminster, 7000 Church Ranch Boulevard, Westminster, CO 80021.

We urge to book your hotel room at the Denver Marriott Westminster as revenue from sleeping rooms helps offset other meeting costs and is passed down to attendees in keeping registration rates to a minimum.

A block of rooms have been reserved at the hotel for meeting attendees at the special rate of $156 single/double plus tax.  Rates do not include applicable state and local taxes, currently 13.51%.

These special rates will be available the three days before and after the conference based on availability. We urge you to make reservations early since space is limited.  Reservations made after 2 May, 2014 are on a space available basis and the group rate is not guaranteed.

Registration

All attendees must register to attend the conference. Registration may be completed online, via fax-in form, or onsite. Everyone presenting (both oral and poster) and/or attending must register and wear a badge. Be sure to register by 04/26/14 in order to receive the lower registration rate. Registrations received at AMS from 04/27/14 and through the conference dates will be processed at the higher rate (see rates below). After 05/12/14 please register at the meeting or online. Payment may be made with check, purchase order (hard copy required) or credit card (MasterCard/VISA/American Express). FAXED registration forms must be accompanied by payment (PO or credit card # only).

   

FULL-WEEK PACKAGE

The full-week package includes admission to all conferences, exhibits, coffee breaks, ice breaker reception, and one ticket to Wednesday's Luncheon.

ONE-DAY PACKAGE

The one-day package includes for one calendar day admission to all conferences, exhibits, and coffee breaks for one day. The Wednesday luncheon ticket is NOT included.

SHORT COURSE

AMS Short Course on Meteorological Measurements and Instrumentation, 8-9 June 2014
The AMS Short Course on Meteorological Measurements and Instrumentation will be held 8-9 June 2014 preceding the 17th Symposium on Meteorological Observations and Instrumentation in Westminster, CO.  The goal of this short course is to introduce, explain and demonstrate how various meteorological measurements are taken, recorded and quality controlled.
 
The first day will provide the background and technical aspects of the various measurements.  Sensors will be described and demonstrated with some hands-on experience.  The second day will consist of a field tour around the Boulder area to visit current observing sites including: NCAR Marshall Field instrument test bed, NCAR aircraft facility, NEON (National Ecological Observatory Network), NCAR S-pol radar facility and the Vaisala facility. 

A luncheon will be provided on day 1.  Day 2 will include a stop in Boulder to purchase lunch at the participant’s cost.  Laptops/notebooks are encouraged. All course materials will be provided on USB flash drives. More Information

BOULDER AREA FIELD TOUR

Field Tour Around the Boulder Area to Visit Current Observing Sites, 9 June 2014
Join us in Boulder one day early to join the AMS’s Short Course Day 2 tour around the Boulder area to visit current observing sites including: NCAR Marshall Field instrument test bed, NCAR aircraft facility, NEON (National Ecological Observatory Network), NCAR S-pol radar facility and the Vaisala facility. We will include a stop in Boulder to purchase lunch at the participant’s cost. Ticket price and timetable to be posted here soon.

CONFERENCE LUNCHEON

Wednesday, 11 June 12:00–1:30 p.m.
A ticket is needed to attend the Wednesday Luncheon. One ticket to the 17th Symposium on Meteorological Observation and Instrumentation/21th Conference on Applied Climatology Luncheon is included in the full-week registration package. The Luncheon will take place at the Denver Marriott Westminster Hotel. Guest and/or additional tickets ($50 each) may be purchased on-site until noon Tuesday 10 June. Any special dietary requests should be communicated to an AMS staff member by Tuesday 10 June.

Student Opportunities

AMS Student Travel Grants: http://www.ametsoc.org/amsstudentinfo/stg_info.html, air/hotel/registration fee awards for student AMS members not presenting at the conference.

AMS Student Assistant Program:
Volunteer students are needed for registration and audio/visual support during the conference. Student volunteers are required to be in attendance the entire conference, and be available to work each day of the conference. For volunteering, the student will get their registration fee waived and $25.00 per day for food allowance. This program is a first come, first serve basis. A limited number of students will be needed for the conference. Those students interested please contact Ms. Gillian Peguero, at gpeguero@ametsoc.org.

POSTERS PRESENTERS

A Formal Poster Viewing is scheduled for Tuesday Evening of the conference. Poster set up and tear down times will be provided soon.

While laptop tables are available by request (please email gpeguero@ametsoc.org), electricity access is not. There will not be wireless access in the poster area.

Please note that AMS is not responsible for posters not removed by the tear down time.

Travel south and take the ramp onto Pena Blvd. Travel 11.4 miles and merge onto I-70 W. Travel 3.6 miles and take a slight right onto I-270 W. Travel 6.8 miles and continue onto US-36 W. Travel 6.8 miles and take the 104th Ave exit toward Church Ranch Blvd. Travel 0.3 miles and turn left onto W 104th Ave. Continue onto Church Ranch Blvd. Travel 0.2 miles and make a left turn at light at 103rd Ave. The hotel will be on the left.
