Past Officers of the Oregon Chapter AMS
The national AMS was founded in 1919. On May 13th, 1947, following the effort of Professor Fred Decker, the national AMS council recognized the organization of a “meteorological seminar group at Oregon State College as a branch of the AMS.”
Branches were later labeled as chapters. Professor Decker served as Chairman for ten years. In February 1955, Professor Decker advised the national AMS of plans to reorganize the OSU group as a state-wide branch, with meetings to be held around Oregon. At that time in Oregon there were 45 members of the national AMS.
The first meeting of the redesigned Oregon Branch was held on January 13th, 1956 in Portland with 36 present. Other meetings in 1956 where held in Salem, and Portland.
Members were eager to promote the fledgling field of meteorology. Individuals were ambitious and professional ideals were paramount. To help bind the small group, quarterly meetings were planned as dinner meetings with invitation for spouses and guests.
A strong democratic tradition has prevailed as hundreds have volunteered over the years to serve as Oregon Chapter officers. The current level of Oregon Chapter membership is over 100.
