Spotlight: State of the Climate Report

The was released on Aug 31! The report, compiled by NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information, is based on contributions from scientists around the world. Released each summer, the State of the Climate is the authoritative annual summary of the global climate, fully peer-reviewed and published as a supplement to the .

 

Whether you dip into the Introduction—which describes the complexity of Earth’s climate system evident in 2021—or dive into all six regional chapters and the supplemental data sets, this 32nd issuance of the annual State of the Climate Report provides a detailed update on global climate indicators, notable weather events, and other data collected by environmental monitoring stations and instruments located on land, water, ice, and in space.

Annual Giving Fund

plays an essential role in moving AMS programs forward. Membership renewal for 2023 will be opening 1 October. Many members generously make a donation along with their renewal and many AMS friends make contributions in the same time frame. AMS Elections open today! Student Opportunities at Annual Meeting

If you would like to share, learn, collaborate, and network at the 103rd AMS Annual Meeting—AMS can help!

 

Do you have what it takes to be a ? AMS provides hotel accommodations, meeting registration, and a small per diem to dependable undergraduate AMS student members who work directly with AMS staff to provide services to conference attendees. The deadline is 30 September—!

 

Are you interested in a to cover costs? Senior undergraduates or graduate students—apply now for an AMS Student Travel Grant! To encourage interactions among students, their peers, and professionals in the field, AMS will fund your travel costs, hotel, and meeting registration to attend the Annual Meeting in Houston. Applications are due on 30 September.

AMS Glossary Word of the Month

In northern Sumatra, a warm, dry local wind blowing on the plains of Deli, Langkat, and Lerdang.

 

It is caused by the east monsoon blowing across the Barisan Mountains and descending on the leeward side as a foehn. The bohorok occurs in May and is prevalent through September; it is feared because of its effect on the tobacco plantations on the plains of Deli.
