Tenth Symposium on Fire and Forest Meteorology

15-17 October 2013, Bowling Green, KY

The Tenth Symposium on Fire and Forest Meteorology, sponsored by the American Meteorological Society and organized by the AMS Committee on Agricultural and Forest Meteorology, will be held 15-17 October 2013 at the Holiday Inn University Plaza, Bowling Green, KY.

Attendees are responsible for making their own hotel arrangements.  All meeting sessions for the conferences will be held at the Holiday Inn University Plaza, Bowling Green, KY, 1021 Wilkinson Trace, Bowling Green, KY 42103.

We urge to book your hotel room at the Holiday Inn University Plaza as revenue from sleeping rooms helps offset other meeting costs and is passed down to attendees in keeping registration rates to a minimum.
A block of rooms have been reserved at the hotel for meeting attendees at the special rate of (currently) $99.00 single/double plus tax and $129 plus tax for Standard Suites.  Rates do not include applicable state and local taxes, currently 13.42%.

These special rates will be available the three days before and after the conference based on availability. We urge you to make reservations early since space is limited. Reservations made after 16 September, 2013 are on a space available basis and the group rate is not guaranteed.

Government Per Diem Rate:  A limited number of guestrooms will be offered on a first-come first-serve basis at the prevailing federal government per diem (Government ID must be presented at check-in).   Guests who would like to book a room at the per diem rate should contact the hotel direct at (270) 745-0088 and ask for the Groups Room Coordinator, Elizabeth Myers, at extension 1032.

REGISTRATION (Please note all speakers must register)

1) On-line Registration: This option is available to AMS Members and nonmembers who are paying by credit card or purchase order. You can register on-line through the conference. Be sure to register by 2 September, 2013 for the lowest rates.

3) On-site registration: The AMS registration desk at the Holiday Inn University Plaza will be open for registration on Monday, 14 October (times TBD) and Tuesday through Thursday during the hours of the conference.

ONE DAY PACKAGE includes: Admittance to all conferences and coffee breaks for one day (except the luncheon ticket).

Confirmation of registration will be sent once the registration form has been processed at AMS Headquarters. REGISTRATION WILL NOT BE PROCESSED WITHOUT PAYMENT. Wednesday Luncheon/Banquet

The Wednesday Luncheon will be held October 16 in the Ballroom B from 11:30-1:00pm. Information about the Luncheon Invited Speaker is TBA. 

Formal Poster Viewing

A Formal Poster Viewing is scheduled for Tuesday, October 15 from 5:30-7:30pm in Ballroom A.  A cash bar and light appetizers will be provided.  Poster Viewings will continue through the conference during coffee breaks.

AMS Field Trip to Mammoth Cave National Park

Tickets are $50 and can be purchased with your registration package or onsite. The tour is limited to 15 people, so book your ticket as soon as possible.

Mammoth Cave National Park, designated a Class I area under the Clean Air Act, as amended in 1977 and 1991, was established in 1941 to protect and preserve the caves and their environments, dramatic river valleys, karst landscape typical of southcentral Kentucky, and the flora and fauna within its 52,830 acre boundary.  The park holds more than 400 caves, one of those being the longest known cave in the world, Mammoth Cave, at 400 miles in length.  The 31 miles of the Green and Nolin Rivers within the park harbor one of the most diverse river systems in the world, with 82 species of fish and 53 species of freshwater mussels (seven are threaten and endangered). 

The AMS Field Trip to Mammoth Cave National Park will visit:

  • two oak-hickory prescribed fire units, Floating Mill Hollow and Jim Lee Ridge, burned within the past 6 years. 
  • the Mammoth Cave National Park air quality station, featuring IMPROVE samplers, CASTNet sampler, NADP National Trends Network and Mercury Deposition Network collectors, gaseous pollutant monitoring (O3, NO, NOy, SO2, CO).  Meteorological data collected include RAWS and National Park Service meteorological monitoring instrumentation.
  • tour a portion of the Historic Tour route of Mammoth Cave to view artifacts from an 1812 saltpeter mining artifacts and an ongoing cave micrometeorology study.  
  • discussions with Bobby Carson, Chief, Science and Resources Management Division, and Rick Olson, Ecologist, on park resources management programs.

Safety notes:  The cave temperature is a relatively stable 54 - 60 degrees F and it is recommended attendees bring a light jacket and sturdy walking boots.  There are also approximately 100 steps along the cave tour route.  Attendee’s should also be aware that while in the prescribed fire burn units, exposure to ticks, snakes, stinging insects, and poison ivy are possibilities.

Follow signs from the airport to Interstate 65 south. Take I-65 south to exit 22. Turn right at the end of the exit ramp. Go two miles. At stop light with #3 indicator, turn right. Hotel is ahead on your left.

The Holiday Inn University Plaza offers a complimentary local area shuttle within a 5 mile radius of the hotel, subject to availability.

Party 1 Limousine of Bowling Green, KY is providing a discounted airport shuttle service from and to the Nashville International Airport. The rate is $70 each way, per person.

You must make your own reservations. Discounted Rate applies ONLY to reservations booked in advance (at least 24 hours prior to arrival).
