7th Annual Conference for Early Career Professionals

The 7th Annual Conference for Early Career Professionals was held in conjunction with the 99th AMS Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona.  The conference chairs were Jared Rennie, Jordan Bell, and Becky DePodwin.

Highlights of the conference:

  • Special morning coffee break, where AMS President Roger Wakimoto was in attendance.
  • Improv networking session with Raquell Holmes of Improv Science 
  • Keynote given by Dr. Gina Eosco, 2018 winner of the AMS Award for Early Career Achievement
  • Rotating group discussion on issues early career members face, including working environments, the art of negotiating, and finance information.
  • Special Lunch called "Roadmap to CCM," where attendees learned about the Certified Consulting Meteorologist (CCM) seal, and had the chance to do a live analysis of a forensic meteorology case with CCMs on hand. 
  • Session on Mental Health in Meteorology
  • Session on Non-Traditional jobs, featuring organizations such as Crocs and SCOR SE
  • Special session with Presidential Town Hall Speaker Marcia McNutt, head of the National Academy of Sciences. A panel discussion on diversity, equity, and inclusion also took place.
  • Session about the first ever AMS Early Career Leadership Academy, featuring 2018 ambassadors reflecting on their time as an ECLA participant, and also looking to the future.
  • Session about the tips and tricks to be a better speaker, led by Dr. Susan Jasko.
  • Numerous networking sessions, including our public reception on Sunday evening, a speed networking event on Monday evening, and an informal event where registered members and speakers could attend.
