AMS Statements

A new AMS Statement was adopted by the Council on 30 July. It aims to address the complexities raised by the COVID-19 pandemic for public safety planning in hurricane season. The statement seeks to highlight specific preparedness actions that the public is strongly encouraged to take before flooding, damaging winds, and storm surge threatens their community.

A draft of another new statement Priorities for a New Decade: Weather, Water, and Climate is posted for comment, . Scientific observations and research in weather, water, and climate help us meet basic human needs and create enormous opportunity for economic and societal advancement. Near-term policy choices will help determine the nation’s WWC capabilities and vulnerabilities for decades to come.

Profiles from BAMS

"In college I discovered that the mathematical and physical concepts I had been studying for years could actually be combined into a set of equations that could describe and predict the weather! I was amazed and fascinated by that. Suddenly I could see an everyday application of my studies that absolutely captivated my interest."

~Karen Johnson, Brookhaven National Laboratory, co-author of the upcoming BAMS cover feature on the LASSO project. Hear more of the stories and insights behind the articles—from the authors themselves—in your print and available only to AMS members.

Hurricane Florence radar image

AMS Glossary Word of the Month

A hurricane radar band of circular or spiral shape associated with a tropical cyclone (hurricane or typhoon).

Made evident by radar observations, hurricane bands typically curve cyclonically inward toward the center of the storm. The bands may be classified as primary if they merge into the eyewall encircling the eye of the storm, or secondary if they are disconnected from the eyewall. Hurricane bands generally move slowly around the center of the storm in the direction of the hurricane circulation.
