What's New?
AMS Weather Band Open!
The AMS Weather Band was created to reach beyond our core membership of professionals and engage the public—AMS Executive Director Keith Seitter describes it as "one huge ongoing conversation among people eager to learn more about how the atmosphere works, sharing their own experiences and observations, while engaging with experts who can give them insights into the latest research results, new observational capabilities, new forecast techniques, and a host of other topics..." All Great Things Come to an End—But at AMS They Are the Beginning of Something Greater
The AMS 100th Anniversary Campaign is about to end. We have, so far, raised almost $10,000,000! If you have not yet given to the campaign, or if you have the ability to give again, please donate today, on this Giving Tuesday.
As we enter our second century, AMS will continue to expand its efforts to protect the integrity of science and provide authoritative information for policy-makers and the general public, while also supporting students, teachers, scientists, and the wide range of professionals that make up the AMS community. All gifts and pledges (including commitments to an estate gift) will be counted for the campaign if received by 31 December 2020. Make an online donation today and help to move forward the Centennial initiatives to propel AMS into our second century.

“I have always had a love for nature and all things weather-wise. During my master’s thesis work, I began working with land surface models, coupled to global climate models, and from that grew further my interest and passion in hydrometeorological connections and water resource applications. When I went to work for NASA, I was able to work directly in support of these areas and toward applying the amazing science being conducted at NASA to real-world applications, like forecasting drought.”
—Kristi R. Arsenault, NASA

AMS Glossary Word of the Month |
Any of a family of colored or whitish rings, arcs, pillars or spots of light that appear in the sky and are explained by the reflection or refraction of light by ice crystals.
They are usually found in the vicinity of the light source, the most important of which are the sun and moon, but may arise from artificial lights if seen, say, through an ice fog. Halos exhibiting some prismatic coloration are explained, at least in part, by the refraction of light by the ice crystals. However, the color is usually fairly pale, being best on a red edge next to
the light. Read more »
