Spotlight: New AMS Awards

2020 brings the creation of three new AMS awards, and we are seeking nominations for all AMS Awards, Lectureships, and Honors. The new Awards are:

The , recognizing the combination of highly significant research and distinguished scientific leadership.

The , which will recognize outstanding research in climate science.

The , which will recognize outstanding research in tropical meteorology.

There have been other changes to AMS Awards recently: the AMS Council renamed the mentorship award to be the , and now are specifically aimed at recognizing outstanding mid-career scientists.

 

AMS relies on its members and friends to nominate those individuals, teams of people, and organizations whose work should be recognized for its greater purpose and value to the entire enterprise.

Summer Policy Colloquium

Put yourself in the picture!

2020 AMS Summer Policy Colloquium

If you want to put your science to work and see it contribute to a better world, start with ten days at the AMS Summer Policy Colloquium (May 31- June 9, 2020 in Washington, D.C.).

 

Join 30-40 of your peers meeting with federal officials, Congressional members and staffers, and other policy leaders to discuss:

  • Public-private-academic partnerships, domestically and internationally
  • Policy implications of the Weather Research and Forecasting Innovation Act of 2017, as well as selected climate-change legislation,
  • Valuation – what’s involved in estimating the worth of environmental intelligence to society and the world.
  • …and more.

. Registration will open early in February; check the page, because acceptance is on a first-come, first-served basis. Deadline is April 15, 2020.

AMS Glossary Word of the Month

 

(Or dendrite.) A crystal, particularly a planar ice crystal, with its macroscopic form (crystal habit) characterized by intricate branching structures of a treelike nature.

 

Dendritic ice crystals possess hexagonal symmetry, and tend to develop when a crystal grows by vapor deposition at temperatures within a few degrees of -15°C, providing saturation is close to supercooled water.
