Celebrating Monthly Weather Review’s 150th year!

Join AMS Publications in our year-long celebration—this month’s feature is 1979’s Presidents’ Day Snowstorm. Read about the storm and its impacts on research and on a conversation between Lance Bosart and Louis Uccellini, whose research on the storm sparked more than a decade of scientific debate on extratropical cyclone development.

Weather Forecaster to Research Scientist by Robert M. Atlas

As a young child, Robert M. Atlas would often look up at the sky, observe the clouds, and ask his parents questions about the weather. That early interest sparked a career in meteorology that spanned sixty years and took place during a period of rapid development in the field. Weather Forecaster to Research Scientist follows Dr. Atlas’s decades-long career and his innovative research, which led to improvements in the understanding and prediction of extreme weather. An engaging account of a distinguished career, Dr. Atlas’s memoir is an informative read for students, educators, weather forecasters, scientists, and weather enthusiasts alike.

Available now in paperback, with an eBook forthcoming. .

Input requested on Geoscience and Human Health

AMS is initiating a project to solicit and synthesize input from the AMS community on opportunities and challenges at the interface of human health, geoscience, and the Earth system. This is a rapid-response effort being conducted on an accelerated time frame, and we are seeking broad input primarily during the month of March. We are particularly focused on developing new ideas from the AMS community on convergent, transformative, and applications-oriented (i.e., use-inspired) research that might be implemented immediately and show progress quickly (e.g., in a 2–3-yr time frame), while having positive impacts on both scientific advancement and societal applications of science over a much longer period.

Profile from BAMS

"In college I spent most my time competing in premier league bridge and seemed to be destined to become a professional bridge player. When I learned that heavy rainfall in the South China Sea can occur a couple days following cold air outbreaks from far away Siberia, I thought weather forecasting can be as fun as bridge. Instead of counting cards, I just have to count the cold air outbreaks and rainfall. And my father would be happier with me if I did not make a living playing cards."

Chih-Pei Chang (Naval Postgraduate School and National Taiwan University), whose BAMS article reviews the current state of knowledge of climate change and its impacts on the global monsoon and its regional components, and discusses challenges of the present and future modeling and outlooks.
