Updates from the 96th AMS Annual Meeting in New Orleans

WeatherFest

Weatherfest took place on Sunday afternoon of the Annual Meeting. Hundreds of people from the New Orleans area, including families, Scout Troops, and science students, enjoyed a free day of fun and educational activities on everything weather.

Student Conference

More than 800 AMS student members attended the Annual AMS Student Conference. Talks on career building and tricks of the trade, and advice from professionals in the government, academic, and private sectors were presented over the two-day conference. Small breakout sessions allowed students and early career professionals one-on-one opportunities to discuss items of interest and general question and answers sessions were beneficial to attendees.

Secretary Pritzker's Address

AMS was honored to host US Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker, who spoke at an informal town hall meeting with NOAA Administrator Kathryn Sullivan. Secretary Pritzker talked about the continued need for the entire enterprise to collaborate and share information to ensure society has the best chance to benefit.

Presidential Forum

The Presidential Forum, moderated by Maureen McCann, had an outstanding panel of speakers: Admiral Thad Allen (ret), Max Mayfield, Kerry Emanuel and Shirley Laska. They discussed personal experiences during Hurricane Katrina and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and spoke about the importance of applying lessons learned to future events.

Exhibit Hall Opening

The Exhibit Hall opening attracted a large crowd of attendees on Monday night. The largest exhibit program anywhere in the atmospheric, oceanic, and related sciences, visitors were presented with an array of products, services, and publications. The venue served as a place to meet up with friends and colleagues and to network with others in the weather, water, and climate community.
