Congratulations to AMS President-Elect Jenni Evans and to our new AMS Council members Melissa Burt (Colorado State University), Bob Henson (Weather Underground),Gary Lackman (North Carolina State Univ.), Shirley Murillo (NOAA/AOML) and Fifth Councilor (selected by the Council) Jennifer Henderson (CIRES).
As we welcome the newly elected leaders, the AMS Nominating Committee is already soliciting recommendations for next year. Candidates will be considered as the slate for the 2018 election is prepared. Send a 1 page letter of recommendation to the Nominating Committee by 31 December 2017.

Newest open access monograph |
Ice Formation and Evolution in Clouds and Precipitation: Measurement and Modeling Challenges, edited by Darrel Baumgardner, Greg McFarquhar, and Andrew Heymsfield, is now fully available online as Meteorological Monograph 58. This monograph represents a compendium of information provided by experts in the cloud physics community who recognized the need for a summary of our current state of understanding of how ice forms and evolves and of our technological capability to measure the properties of ice crystals. Print volumes will be available soon at the AMS Bookstore, the Journals Online Print-on-Demand site, and through University of Chicago Press.

New Opportunity for Early Career Leaders |
The Commission on Professional Affairs and the Education and Human Resources Commission have just announced they are accepting applications for participation in the first AMS 2018 Early Career Leadership Academy (ECLA).
The ECLA aims to build and sustain a diverse network of early career leaders in weather, water, and climate science. Eligibility and criteria for participation are outlined on the web page along with a nomination form.

AMS Journals Discontinuing Article Type |
Due to much greater efficiency in the journals’ peer review and production processes, and a significant drop in the number of submissions of this article type, the Publications Commission has decided to discontinue offering Expedited Contribution (EC) as an alternative article type to authors. An editorial explaining this decision is being published in the December issues of the journals.

white frost |
A relatively heavy coating of hoarfrost.
With respect to vegetation, a white frost is less damaging than a black frost for at least two reasons: 1) it tends to insulate the plant from further cold; and 2) it releases latent heat of fusion (albeit slight) to the environment.
