Spotlight: AMS Journals Continue to Lead

The AMS Publications Commission met in Boston on 25–26 May and Director of Publications Ken Heideman was happy to report that review and mean production times are at an all-time low (in the 70-day range). Speed and quality must go hand in hand for metrics to truly mean anything, and that is certainly the case with AMS journals; Thompson Reuters Impact Factors ® remain high and continue to rise for many of the journals (AMS publications hold 6 of the top 21 slots in the most recent ranking).

The AMS interviews with AMS-published, Europe-based atmospheric scientists Prof. Thomas Spengler (University of Bergen), Prof. Juerg Luterbacher (University of Giessen), and Prof. Harald Rieder (University of Graz) at EGU 2016 are now available on the AMS YouTube Channel.

Attention all Undergraduate Students! The Father James B. Macelwane Award deadline is 10 June, 2016. The award is given to the best original student paper concerned with some phase of the atmospheric sciences. The winner receives $1000 and partial travel support to the AMS Annual Meeting. A student must be enrolled as an undergraduate at the time the paper is written. Apply now! Questions? Contact Donna Fernandez.

AMS Policy Program Updates

On 25 May, the AMS Policy Program held a Capitol Hill briefing on "Radio Spectrum for Earth Science." This well-attended briefing, featuring Paige Atkins, NTIA; Scott Pace, George Washington University; and Mark Paese, NESDIS, reached over 80 people, including Hill staff, executive agency employees, and members of the AMS and telecommunications communities. Slides from the briefing are available here

On 18 May, AMS members visited with over 30 Congressional offices to share the work of the weather, water, and climate community. Ten scientists, from the academic, public, and private sectors, discussed how their work benefits the U.S. economy and public safety. Highlights included in-person meetings with Senator Whitehouse (D-RI), Senator Scott (R-SC), and Representative Bridenstine (R, OK-01), as well as meetings with key Committee staff.

Did You Know?
AMS special collections bring together articles published in the AMS journals that focus on a particular topic; special collections can include results from field studies, papers from meetings or conferences on specialized topics, or papers on any topic of current interest in the atmospheric, oceanic, and related sciences. All the articles in a special collection are linked to that collection’s web page, so they are easy to find and access. So whether you are interested in Connecting the Tropics to Polar Regions, Mountain Terrain Atmospheric Modeling and Observations, or Ocean Turbulence—check out the Special Collections pages.

Recordings and supplementary info for the 32nd Conference on Hurricanes and Tropical Meteorology are now available!
