Innovation and Opportunity

AMS President Roger Wakimoto addressed attendees of this week's on Sunday. "The meeting has been shaping up to be one of the biggest ever with 3,700 attendees, 3,100 presentations, and nearly 100 exhibitors. Thank you to to the thousands of presenters and hundreds of volunteers who have contributed to its success despite the unfortunate federal government shutdown that has prevented many of our valued colleagues from attending," Wakimoto said.

Presidential Forum

"Building Resilience to Extreme Political Weather: Advice for Unpredictable Times" was the theme of the held Sunday evening. David Goldston, director of the MIT Washington Office, talked about how scientists need to help create a long-term political climate that strengthens the position of their enterprise during the short-term ups and downs of political weather. He noted that scientists can be confident that science benefits from nearly unwavering high esteem in public opinion and advocated that we need to exploit that reputation—and the widespread recognition of the value of scientific findings in policymaking circles—while recognizing that both sides of any choice will actively use science to bolster it. .

Inclusivity

Inclusivity is a key theme of the 99th Annual Meeting, and two events highlighted that spirit. The brought together lesbian–gay–bisexual–transgender–queer (LGBTQ) friends and allies to mentor, network, and connect with individuals who share common professional and personal interests. The was formed from an aspirational goal for greater inclusion and access of people from all backgrounds in the geosciences.

Presidential Town Hall Meeting

Monday's featured Marcia McNutt, president of the National Academy of Sciences, who gave an overview on the continued importance of evidence-based science in society. .

Student Conference and Career Fair

The and Career Fair was the main event on Saturday, bringing more than 670 young scientists together with experts from the private, broadcast, academic, and government sectors. The Career Fair provided networking opportunities and a forum for those attending the student conference to personally interact with potential employers and graduate institutions. Sunday's Career Fair session was open to all Annual Meeting attendees.

Exhibits

Nearly participated in the 99th Annual Meeting. AMS is host to the largest exhibit program anywhere in the atmospheric, oceanic, and related sciences; exhibitors came from all over the United States and abroad to showcase a wide range of products, publications, and services.

The Awards Banquet is a chance to recognize those individuals, teams of people, and organizations whose work is acknowledged for its greater purpose and value to the entire enterprise. !
