Weather has been Mike Nelson’s favorite subject since he was 7 years old when he witnessed a powerful thunderstorm that rocked his hometown of Madison, WI. He earned his degree in Meteorology from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and began his weather career in 1976 at Weather Central, a Madison based weather consulting firm, specializing in forecasts for TV, radio, agribusiness, ski areas and utilities. In collaboration with fellow meteorologist Terry Kelly, they developed what would become one of the most widely used television weather graphics system world-wide. In 1985, Mike and his wife Cindy moved to KMOV-TV in St. Louis where he served as Chief Meteorologist until 1991 when he accepted a job at Denver 7 KMGH-TV where he has been forecasting the weather for over 25 years and is now their Chief Meteorologist. Mike has authored two books on weather and climate, The Colorado Weather Almanac (2007) and The Colorado Weather Book (1999). He has also written numerous weather pamphlets and articles for magazines. He's won 18 Emmy's for Weather Excellence, received an Edward R. Murrow Award and earned the distinction of Colorado Broadcaster of the Year twice.
