2019 AMS annual meeting Station Scientist sessions - Mike Nelson wrap-up
Topics included:
Copernicus project in Europe similar to Climate Central
Climate data to local farmers
Social science on climate change
Broadcast meteorologists techniques
Amber Sullins - update on potential speakers for San Diego in June
Reaching out to Sherri Goodman and Sweta Chakraborty to come speak about how climate change is changing the geopolitical landscape and impacting national security. Will also speak to Bernadette Wood-Placky at Climate Central who has a lot of ideas for us, too.
Alana Nehring - other ideas for San Diego topics
Fire weather, earthquakes and astronomy (e.g. the next solar eclipse)
"Fire and rain" session - climate change/drought fueled wildfires in the west and rainfall records broken in the east. Marty Ralph at Scripps developed Atmospheric River scale. Could be a presenter for us or the opening session focused on western weather.
Possible astronomy related topics/presenters:
Tony Rice based out of Raleigh could do astronomy presentation. Sends out weekly newsletter to broadcast mets.
Space weather prediction center in Boulder, Colorado. Could do a presentation too.
Space weather certification from AMS in the works. Tamitha Skov chairing the committee for this. Good session possibility.
Kelly Beatty, former member of SSC and contributor to Sky & Telescope Magazine.
We'll work with Ricky at AMS to schedule everything out. We can give special speakers more time (two sessions, instead of one).
February 5th is National Weatherpersons day. Wear your AMS pin on the air that day. #AMS100
