Due to scheduling conflicts, Bob Lindmeier’s panel discussion date has been changed to November 4th. Mike Nelson will send out invitations with Station Scientist Committee letterhead to potential attendees to encourage higher attendance. Bob will write up a posts on the AMS forum advertising the talk as well.
NWS/Broadcasters Round-table Agenda
Mike has a talk planned at NCAR featuring Kevin Trenberth and Katharine Hayhoe with an emphasis on discussing better ways to communicate climate change to the general public.
The 99th Annual Meeting will be held January 6th-10th in 2019 in Phoenix. Mike, Maureen and Elisa are planning on attending, possibly Chris Michaels. Discussed a potential meet-up with other SSC members.
Discussed possible nominations for AMS fellowship.
Mike Nelson is the only member of the SSC set to rotate off at the end of this year. Looking for someone to become committee co-chair when Mike is ready to hand off. Discussed reaching out to Amber Sullins in Phoenix as she expressed interest in joining the SSC.
Next broadcast conference to be held in June 12th-19th in 2019 in San Diego. Irene Sans and AJ are the point contacts for paper and presentation submissions for the SSC session. Mike and Bob discussed working on a joint paper/presentation about the climate roundtables they’re hosting.
Update from Maureen regarding AMS Centennial celebration will be held in Boston in January, 2020. The broadcast conference will coincide with the AMS annual meeting that year. Looking for lots of build-up to the meeting. Asking for participation from as many AMS broadcast meteorologists as possible on National Weather Person’s Day (February 5th) to wear AMS pin and post to social media using #AMS100. Also looking for submissions to the “Share Your Story” section on the AMS website.
Terms of reference will be updated for the Station Scientist Award to state that submissions must be “freely accessible” to avoid content on paid websites.
Maureen also mentioned a new certification program that the AMS plans to roll out soon for school teachers. Looking for help with implementation.
Finally, Maureen mentioned another project that will be featured at AMS 100: broadcasters then and now videos. Will be compiled by the broadcast task force, some SSC members have already offered help.
