The CWWCE incoming commissioner collaborates with the current and past CWWCE commissioners to coordinate, communicate, and advance the activities of the 24 CWWCE boards and committees (B/C) with more than 200 members representing the public, private, and academic sectors that comprise AMS. The incoming commissioner becomes current commissioner after 2 years, and past commissioner 2 years following that, for a total 6 year commitment.
Management of the Commission by Commissioner
- Chair Executive Committee of Board Chairs and AMS representative
- Convene and coordinate Board/Committee Chairs
- Chair Steering Committee (SC) composed of Community leaders, including proposing SC members to AMS Council each year
- Chair Spengler Award Committee
- Serve on Awards Oversight Committee
- Appoint all Board/Committee Chairs and Members
- Link CWWCE Boards/Committees to other Commissions and the Council
- Support Board/Committee leadership to fulfill terms of reference
- Provide strategic guidance to the Commission and its Boards and Committees
- Review and update Commission Boards and Committees Terms of Reference (TOR), as needed
- Work with the Executive Director and Staff to advance the mission of the AMS
- Co-manage cross-commission efforts
- Represent the Commission’s interests to AMS Council
- Provide final approval to all Boards and Committees rosters
- Lead any organizational changes to the Commission, including ad hoc committees, and added/deleted Boards and Committees
Serving on Planning Commission
- Serves as a member of the AMS Planning Commission, representing CWWCE interests and helping to plan AMS Community strategy and activities
- Identify synergies between different Commission and Council efforts
- Provide strategic input for operationalizing goals of the Society
Participation and Reporting to Council
- Regularly report Commission activities to Council
- Attend and participate in all Council deliberations (without vote) by providing strategic input to Council actions from the Commission perspective
- Seek feedback from Council to help provide strategic guidance to CWWCE Boards and Committees
- Seek approval for Commission actions that require Council action
- Serve on task forces/working groups as needed/desired
The ideal candidates will have specific experience within the CWWCE Commission at a board or committee level, have demonstrated commitment to the mission of the AMS, have the capacity to manage the volunteer network and activities of a wide-ranging commission.
Estimated Workload and Travel Commitments
Though highly variable from week to week, on average, commissioner time commitment is at least 4 hours per week. The time commitments peak in June (Awards responsibilities), at the Annual Meeting (full day of commission meetings on the Saturday before AMS week), and in finalizing rosters after the new year.
The Commissioner should plan to be present at quarterly Council meetings. It is strongly encouraged, though not required, to travel to the in person AMS Council Meetings, including the one at the Annual Meeting during your 2-year tenure as Commissioner. In-person attendance is also encouraged for year #2 as Future Commissioner.
