Satellite Precipitation Thematic Day - Exploring the Value Chain and Integrated Community Challenges Schedule - Wednesday, January 31st

  • 10:45 am - 12:00 pm:  Satellite Instruments: Capturing Precipitation & Extreme Even
  • 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm:  Exploring the Challenges and Opportunities in the Satellite Data Value Chain: Linking Satellite Instruments to Applied Use
  • 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm:  Satellite Products: Precipitation & Extreme Events
  • 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm:  Use of Satellite Data in Precipitation and Extreme Event Forecasting

Satellite data and products add critical value to our efforts to forecast weather and monitor the integrated Earth system in a changing world, but satellite instrument engineers do not speak the same language as operational weather forecasters and we have few opportunities to bring together the broader community to engage, align and understand the integrated challenges our community faces. Breaking down communications barriers in a community-centered forum will allow all stakeholders representing academia, industry and the public sector to more broadly understand challenges and create collective solutions to address them. Therefore, the Committee on Satellite Meteorology, Oceanography and Climatology is orchestrating an opportunity for engagement with a satellite value value chain focused on precipitation-based applications during the AMS Annual Meeting in Baltimore. Come walk through three curated sessions on Wednesday, January 31st that speak to the instrument, algorithms and applied use of satellite-derived precipitation data. Also join us for a boxed lunch Town Hall to engage with experts from across the satellite data value chain where we highlight the integrated challenges and discuss how we can best address them as a satellite and applied use community.
