Leadership Transition at AMS Headquarters

10 December, 2024

Dear Members,

With deep admiration for the AMS community, I write today to inform you that I will be stepping down from my position as Executive Director & CEO of the American Meteorological Society on December 31 of this calendar year. I am grateful for the opportunity to have served AMS for the past three years as we worked together in pursuit of the AMS mission. I am proud of the work that we have accomplished together, and I am confident that AMS is on steady ground to continue to be a leader in the weather, water, and climate enterprise.

Stella Kafka,
Executive Director, American Meteorological Society

Dear Members,

As Dr. Stella Kafka has indicated in her message above, at the end of this month, she will complete her term of service as AMS Executive Director. We deeply appreciate Dr. Kafka’s contributions during her tenure and wish her well in her future endeavors.

AMS Council has approved the appointment of Associate Executive Director Brian Papa as Acting Executive Director for an interim period, starting on 1 January 2025 and continuing until the Executive Director role is permanently filled. Brian has been with the AMS for 17 years and has overseen AMS’s operations for the last 6 years.

Over the next year, AMS leadership, staff, and volunteers will continue to work diligently to advance the AMS mission, most notably in striving to ensure the AMS community is provided with high-quality meetings, publications, career services, training and educational opportunities, and professional services.

The search for the next Executive Director will begin in early 2025. It is expected this process will take much of the year. Additional information will be provided to members in the coming months as the process progresses.

Thank you for your continued support of and commitment to the AMS mission.

Sincerely,
Anjuli S. Bamzai, 2024 President, AMS
David J. Stensrud, 2024 President-Elect, AMS
