Student Opportunities

If you’re a student interested in and or currently studying the field of weather, water, and climate, attending an AMS meeting is an essential and important step in your career path.

  • Expand your knowledge.
  • Improve your research opportunities.
  • Share your own ideas.
  • Connect with experts.
  • Grow personally and professionally.

AMS wants to help you attend our meetings – we offer several support opportunities to make this possible.

Student Assistant

Volunteer students are needed for registration and audio/visual support throughout the conference. Volunteers are required to be in attendance the entire conference, and must be available to work at least a full day from Monday through Friday. In exchange for volunteering, students receive one free conference registration, plus $40.00 per day worked for food allowance. This program is offered on a first come, first served basis. A limited number of students will be needed for the conference. Interested? Please contact Marissa Welch ([email protected]) for details.

Travel Grants

AMS will be awarding travel grants to non-presenting students to attend AMS meetings.  Please visit the Student Travel Grant Page for more information and to apply.

Student Awards

The 18th Conference on Polar Meteorology and Oceanography is pleased to support students conducting polar research.  We will be awarding first, second and third place prizes for both poster and oral presentations given by students ($100 for first and $50 each for second and third places).  Student presentations will be judged on scientific content, presentation delivery, and the overall effectiveness of communication.  You must indicate your eligibility for this award when submitting your abstract.  Additionally, we will be offering four travel awards of $340 each to presenting students, designed to partially offset student member registration fees and other travel-related costs.  Students that are presenting their work at the conference and who would like to be considered for travel support should indicate so when submitting their abstract; further justification for need may be required. These awards will be vetted by the committee, and will be based primarily on need and research criteria to ensure a diversity of student involvement at the conference.

For additional information please contact  Cecilia Peralta-Ferriz and Claire Pettersen - chairs of the 18th Conference on Polar Meteorology and Oceanography.

The 36th Conference on Agricultural and Forest Meteorology and 7th Conference on Biogeosciences is proud to provide six outstanding student paper awards. Three awards will be given for oral presentations and three will be given for poster presentations. These awards will recognize students whose presentations demonstrate exceptional quality in terms of:

  • the significance of the work including the importance of the scientific contribution, originality of the research questions, and creativity of the approach;
  • the author’s ability to clearly explain the motivations, methods, results, conclusions, and impact of the work.
  • the author’s knowledge of the subject matter including awareness of prior research in the field;
  • the author’s skill answer questions or addressing concerns regarding the work;
  • the author’s conclusions are supported by data and analyses presented;
  • the presentation’s visual clarity and appeal (e.g., figures and plots are legible and support the author’s narrative, headers and text are concise and easily understood, fonts and color schemes are appropriate, and space is used effectively);
  • and, the presentation’s structure is organized and flows logically (e.g., the motivations and research questions are clearly stated, the methods, results, conclusions, etc. are fully explained, and transitions between each component of the presentation is smooth);

To be eligible for the presentation awards, you must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student enrolled at a university, you also must be the lead author, and you must be personally presenting the work at the conference.
