Local Area Goals

The City of Sante Fe and their County Sustainability Office are continually improving County operations and facilities by providing technical assistance to businesses, public agencies, and residents to ensure shared resources meet the needs of current and future generations through their various initiatives1 Please see below for more information

  • Solarize Santa Fe - Santa Fe County Sustainability offers a free, impartial consultation for residents who are considering solar. Now is a great time to solarize your home, or to encourage your landlord to solarize.
  • Compost at Home - Composting is "recycling" organic materials such as vegetable scraps, leaves, and other wastes into a rich soil amendment that can be used to benefit your garden and the environment.
  • Energy Wise - Efficiency and reduction of energy use is one of the best steps you can take in sustainability.
  • Recycle Right - First, reduce. Then recycle right. Aspirational recycling, which produces recycling contamination,is of concern in Santa Fe County. Learn how to make your recycling effective and where to take your recyclables.
  • Water Wise - When we use less water, we help protect our local water resources and meet current and future needs more sustainably. Since groundwater and surface water are interconnected, using less groundwater means more water for the creeks, springs, rivers, and ecosystems in New Mexico.
  • Clean Commute - Learn about bicycle options, plug-in electric vehicles, public transportation, ride-sharing, and other clean, green transportation choices in Santa Fe County.
  • Nature and Land - Santa Fe County manages several open spaces and parks through the Open Space, Trails, and Parks Program.
  • Reduce and Reuse
  • Green Leaders - Santa Fe County is committed to reaching net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050.
  • And Many More

Sante Fe has developed their Sustainable Santa Fe 25-Year Plan through following these priority themes2.

LEED for Cities - GOLD: In 2020, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) awarded the City of Santa Fe with LEED Gold Certification for its exceptional performance in fostering a sustainable, resilient city. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the most widely used rating system in the world for sustainability achievement and leadership. Santa Fe joins a global network of more than 100 LEED certified cities and communities3.
