Student Opportunities

If you’re a student interested in and or currently studying the field of weather, water, and climate, attending an AMS meeting is an essential and important step in your career path.

  • Expand your knowledge.
  • Improve your research opportunities.
  • Share your own ideas.
  • Connect with experts.
  • Grow personally and professionally.

AMS wants to help you attend our meetings – we offer several support opportunities to make this possible.

Student Assistant

Volunteer students are needed for registration and audio/visual support throughout the conference. Volunteers are required to be in attendance the entire conference, and must be available to work at least a full day from Monday through Friday. In exchange for volunteering, students receive one free conference registration, plus $40.00 per day worked for food allowance. This program is offered on a first come, first served basis. A limited number of students will be needed for the conference. Interested? Please contact Jessica Hanley for details.

Travel Grants

AMS will be awarding travel grants to non-presenting students to attend AMS meetings. Presenters are not eligible to apply. The grant program is available to AMS student members and member graduate students (those who are in their last undergraduate year or who are current graduate students). Member status will be confirmed.

AMS will be awarding  one (1) travel grant for the 41st International Conference on Radar.  Please visit the Student Travel Grant Page for more information and to apply. The application deadline is June 27, 2025.

Student Presentation Awards

The AMS Committee on Radar Meteorology is proud to provide outstanding student presentation awards at the 41st International Conference on Radar Meteorology. Submitters should indicate their eligibility for student awards when submitting their abstracts. Award recipients will be informed of the committee's decision by late September.

Spiros G. Geotis Award

The Spiros G. Geotis Student Prize is awarded for the best student paper presented at each technical conference on radar meteorology. The paper will be judged on content and presentation by a panel selected by the conference program committee. Entrants must be currently enrolled in high school, college, or graduate school. Students who have completed a degree but have not begun regular employment at the time of the conference are also eligible. The prize, an AMS reference book, $200, plus a certificate, was established to recognize Spiros G. Geotis' lifelong contributions to radar meteorology and the encouragement he gave to so many young researchers.
