Effective 1 November 2024, the BAMS special report Explaining Extreme Events from a Climate Perspective is now an AMS Special Collection, welcoming submissions to all AMS journals and BAMS. Prospective authors should read the updated collection scope and submission information below.
Collection Scope
The “Explaining Extreme Events from a Climate Perspective” special collection aims to synthesize cutting-edge research, innovative methodologies, and interdisciplinary approaches to enhance our understanding of extreme events, their links to climate change, and their impacts on human and natural systems. The special collection welcomes contributions that explore both the physical mechanisms by which climate change and natural variations affect extreme events, and the broader implications for society and the environment. Key focus areas include:
- Attribution Studies: Investigating the extent to which climate change influences the frequency, intensity, and spatial distribution of extreme events in tandem with natural variability, with a focus on events that are not addressed in an operational context.
- Regional Perspectives: Analyzing region-specific vulnerabilities, impacts, and adaptation strategies in the face of extremes related to climate variability and change.
- Connections to Modeling and Forecasting: Exploring connections between attribution research and advancing predictive capabilities through state-of-the-art climate models, statistical approaches, and forecasting techniques.
- Socioeconomic Impacts: Assessing the socioeconomic costs of extreme events, including impacts on agriculture, infrastructure, health, and livelihoods.
As with all AMS special collections, manuscripts in this collection will be submitted, reviewed, and published following the same requirements and standards as other papers submitted to AMS publications. The peer review process for collection papers will be handled by regular journal editors, assigned by journal chief editors. The collection organizers may be called on by handling editors to recommend reviewers or to determine the suitability of submitted papers for the collection. Collection organizers do not act as peer review editors.

Author Information
Authors with a manuscript within the scope of the "Explaining Extreme Events from a Climate Perspective” collection should determine which AMS journal best fits the manuscript topic (journal scopes and terms of reference are here). Authors should then follow the submission guidance on the Author Information page.
