July 26-28, 2022 at CU Boulder
This year marked the 100th anniversary of the publication of Lewis Fry Richardson’s book Weather Prediction by Numerical Process. In honor of this remarkable achievement, the AMS Summer Community Meeting (SCM) devoted this year’s meeting to an in-depth review of numerical weather prediction (NWP) across the weather community. With the theme, “The Current State and Future of Numerical Weather Prediction across the Weather, Water, and Climate Enterprise”, this year’s Meeting highlighted many new, transformative initiatives now evolving across the Enterprise, while also soliciting community involvement to discuss some of our emerging challenges.
Topics that were covered at the AMS Summer Community Meeting included:
• State of NWP across the public, private and academic sectors
• Unified Forecast System (UFS) and EPIC
• Innovative observations for NWP
• Overview of the Priorities for Weather Research report
• Earth system modeling and sub-seasonal to seasonal prediction
• Reanalysis, reforecasts
• High-performance computing resources
• Ensemble prediction
• Role of AI/ML and humans in the forecast loop
• Forecast dissemination: Democratizing access
• NWP for decision-making: The Boulder wildfires
• Where to next? Cross-sector coordination opportunities
The AMS Summer Community Meeting (SCM) occurred at a special time during the year when professionals from academia, industry, and government (i.e., the Weather, Water, and Climate Enterprise) come together to discuss broader strategic priorities, identify opportunities to collaborate, and share points of view on pressing topics. The SCM provided a unique, informal setting for constructive deliberation of current issues and development of a shared vision for the future.
