Financial Assistance

In order to ensure that AMS meetings are accessible to all that wish to attend, AMS is offering a variety of financial assistance programs. Please see the applications and their respective deadlines below.

Registration Assistance

In keeping with our goal to ensure that anyone who wants to participate in an AMS Meeting can do so - the AMS supports a program to provide financial support for complementary and reduced registration fees. There is a limited amount of funding available for this program. Those who can show financial need and/or are from professional groups that would typically not receive funding from their home institution to attend an AMS Meeting will be considered. This financial support covers reduced or complimentary registration fees, it does not cover travel or lodging.

To apply, please fill out this form by 21 August 2024. Applicants will receive news of acceptance/rejection 1 week after the application deadline and must register by the Early Registration Deadline. If you apply for assistance, please do not register until you hear back from AMS.

Child Care Grants

The American Meteorological Society is offering child care grants of up to $250 per family to assist conference attendees who will incur additional expenses by attending the meeting. Limited funds are available and preference is given to applicants in the early stages of their career. As a secondary criterion, preference will be given to applicants who explain clearly why a grant to support childcare, dependent care or their own assistance is necessary. To apply, please fill in this form by 30 August 2024. Recipients will be notified by 6 September 2024. Reimbursement distribution will take place after the meeting.

Student Travel Grant

Travel grants will be awarded to students who are not presenting a paper at a conference. Presenters are not eligible to apply. The grant program is available to AMS student members and member graduate students (those who are in their last undergraduate year or who are current graduate students). Member status will be confirmed.

AMS will be awarding two (2) travel grants for the 31st Conference on Severe Local Storms. Please see the Student Travel Grant Page for more information and to apply.  The application deadline is 23 August 2024.

Student Presenter Travel Allowance

The committee is pleased to offer four (4) student award of $250 each to attend the 31st Conference on Severe Local Storms in Virginia Beach, VA 21-25 October 2024. The Student Presenter Travel Allowance is designed to help offset expenses relating to registration fees, transportation costs, food, and lodging for students presenting poster or oral papers. To apply, students should prepare a short written statement (no more than one page) declaring their financial need and circumstance, relevance of their research to the conference, how they will benefit from attending the conference, and a copy of their abstract for the meeting. Travel allowance applications should be submitted to the program chairs, Casey Davenport ([email protected]) and John T. Allen ([email protected]), with the subject line "AMS 31st SLS Conference - Student Presenter Travel Allowance Application".

Application deadline: 26 July 2024

Recipients will be notified on or before: 12 August 2024

Additional details regarding Student Presenter Travel Allowance:

Travel reimbursement will occur after the meeting. Registration should be handled prior to the travel and during the registration period where possible. Winners should work with their AMS lead meeting planner for both reimbursement and registration.

Student Assistant

Volunteer students are needed for registration and audio/visual support throughout the conference. Volunteers are required to be in attendance the entire conference, and must be available to work at least a full day from Monday through Friday. In exchange for volunteering, students receive one free conference registration, plus $40.00 per day worked for food allowance. This program is offered on a first come, first served basis. Faculty Travel Grants (Supported by the National Science Foundation)

AMS is pleased to offer travel grants for faculty from Emerging Research Institutions (ERIs) or Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). These grants are being funded by generous support from the National Science Foundation.

From our annual meeting to specialty conferences, short courses, and events. AMS brings together atmospheric scientists, professionals, students, authors, educators, researchers, and weather enthusiasts from around the world to share research and collaborate. AMS meetings and conferences foster great minds from a diverse set of scientific disciplines. Attendees make career-long professional contacts and lifelong friends while learning from and engaging with top experts and colleagues around the world.

We invite applications from faculty at all career stages who can identify how participating in an AMS Specialty Conference will benefit their research, teaching, or departmental leadership, and who would not be able to attend without this support. The AMS Faculty Travel Grant Program will cover conference registration, airfare, airport transfers, and lodging, plus an allowance for meals. You do NOT need to be an AMS member to apply, but you will need to create an AMS online profile. Any questions about the Faculty Travel Grant Program should be directed to Stephanie Armstrong, AMS Associate Executive Director at [email protected]

Applicants must be employed full-time by a U.S. academic institution.

The deadline for applying is two weeks prior to the start of the specialty conference (4 October 2024).
