Spotlight: Hurricane Katrina 10th Anniversary Panel Discussion – Live Stream Event
Watch our panel of weather experts at the 43rd Conference on Broadcast Meteorology/Third Conference on Weather Warnings and Communication on 10 June at 4:15pm ET as they discuss Hurricane Katrina, one of the deadliest hurricanes ever to hit the United States. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the storm that killed over 1800 people and left millions homeless. We haven’t had another hurricane like it since, so as we move into another tropical season, we’re going to hear from experts that have studied the storm, the events leading up to it, and ultimately how we can learn from it going forward

What's New?
Funding for weather, water, and climate observations, science, and services has been under pressure from Congress this spring. AMS responded with a letter about the value of geosciences. The letter was sent to Appropriations Committee leadership and to the entire House and Senate.
As part of our continued effort to promote greater dialogue and collaboration with meteorological societies of other countries, the AMS has signed a partner agreement with the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (AMOS). This latest agreement is similar to the agreements signed in 2014 with the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (CMOS) and the Indian Meteorological Society (IMS). For AMS members, this means improved access to important scientific and professional information, because it allows each society’s members to join the other at a discounted rate!

The 2015 AMS Washington Forum held in April focused on end users of weather, water, and climate data and paid particular attention to key areas of industry, such as health and the various modes of transportation. Guest speaker Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-Oregon) spoke about ways we can make progress as we approach the environmental challenges of the 21st century. In case you missed it, you can read Bonamici’s speech online.
The Thinking Person’s Guide to Climate Change was recently acknowledged with two awards: the Association and Publishing Media EXCEL Award for best writing, content, design, photographs, and overall packaging of a nontechnical book and a New England Book Show award for design, quality of materials, and workmanship of a general trade book.
